Devuan GNU+Linux

Last Update: 2017-05-23 06:50 UTC

Devuan GNU+Linux is a Linux distribution forked from Debian in 2015. The project's primary goal is to provide a variant of Debian without the complexities and dependencies of systemd, an init system and services manager originally developed by Red Hat and later adopted by most other Linux distributions. Devuan's initial beta release was made available in April 2016, together with an upgrade path from Debian 7.0 "Wheezy" and a possibility to switch to Devuan from Debian 8.0 "Jessie". The distribution adopted Xfce as its default desktop.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Devuan is everything Debian could have been, they should have stayed with what they had and not be loosing so many of their derivative developers.

Devuan runs 165 on my laptop and 185 of memory on my desktop after login, could not ask for a better distro to run and glad I dropped Debian entirely.

The down side of Devuan is the time it's taken to reach a Final release, but Rome was built in a day either.

Installed the minimal net install, customized it to a Wm instead of a DE. The speed and absolute fluid responsiveness is the beauty of Devuan, everything an more what Debian Wheezy was.

Have carried the same install since the alpha release, just changed the sources.list over time with improvements and so far not one hiccup. Using the " -t jessie-backports install" keeps my jessie install running like a charm with newer applications. Very thrilled over the success of Devuan, have three separate machine and keep one with Debian as a comparison. No need to do that any longer, it has surpassed Debian in every aspect.

Honestly, it is about choice. Prefer the freedom of a systemd-less environment without it's tentacles strangling my ability to manage and modifying my computer experience.

Nuff said!

I performed a net install onto my ancient core2 system, and it works great. I spent the last few days customizing it, and am just about to back it up now that I'm happy with it.

I'm disappointed in Debian for going down the systemd route, particularly the way they voted on it, but now there is an alternative that works very well. BTW, my system boots in 12 seconds without systemd.

Started using Linux fall 1999. Seen, installed, run, fouled and switched many distros. This one is quite simple: dd the iso to a flash disk, reboot the system to the flash drive, test and install from there, etc.

Smooth but unfamiliar method within the installer. Runs quite smooth on my Inspiron 1545 dual pentium laptop. I've used sysv initted distros years back, good to see, from a user perspective, how smooth sysv init has remained.

I feel that forking Debian is a tall order. Very tall. Best hopes for this distro.
