Devuan GNU+Linux

Last Update: 2017-10-16 06:50 UTC

Devuan GNU+Linux is a Linux distribution forked from Debian in 2015. The project's primary goal is to provide a variant of Debian without the complexities and dependencies of systemd, an init system and services manager originally developed by Red Hat and later adopted by most other Linux distributions. Devuan's initial beta release was made available in April 2016, together with an upgrade path from Debian 7.0 "Wheezy" and a possibility to switch to Devuan from Debian 8.0 "Jessie". The distribution adopted Xfce as its default desktop.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I've learned a lot about unixlike operating systems since I first installed Debian more than 20 years ago. Each lesson was gained with some measure of pain. When I heard that the Debian was adopting a new init system and service manager framework, I wanted to avoid the cognitive burden of learning a whole new logic to managing the OS. I like the unix concept of building up a system of small, loosely coupled and comprehensible parts. For the same reason I prefer ALSA, or ALSA+JACK for managing sound over the more ambitious pulseaudio, and a simple tiling window manager (i3) to other, heavier desktop environments.

So I was pleased to be able to easily convert my Debian system to Devuan. Upgrading from Debian wheezy to Devuan was trouble-free, just a matter of changing a few lines in /etc/apt/sources.list and starting an upgrade with apt-get.

As far as pros and cons, Devuan is quite similar to Debian. I can continue to use all the online resources for Debian-related issues, as well as a few dedicated Devuan fora.

The main 'pro' for Devuan, is that I can keep my system simple, and deal with lower level of complexity. I know that the case can be made that a big framework with declarative configuration *does* simplify things, but to me that involves new bugs, problems and limitations. I'm ready to stay with the old bugs and old limitations for now, and for now, Devuan allows me to do that.

It still uses Debian Wheezy packages which is kinda old nowadays... So, same problems as BunsenLabs, too old. I know there's testing and SID versions but the main one is so old.
Systemd isn't that bad for you get away from it... Too many crap related to "philosophy" that annoys me.

I upgraded all of my systems from Debian Wheezy to Devuan Jessie. I've had no issues thus far. My systems include my primary desktop, my Kodi media center, and 4 servers in my personal data center hosting various things from a gaming platform to an amprolla server.
