Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

It is funny how everyone that tried Feren OS(or any similar distro) compares it with Mint. I guess Mint became throughout the years the standard for a modern OS that can easily replace Windows.Rock solid and reliable.

Now Feren...

I love the simplicity, one can almost forget it's Linux if you apply one of the many themes. The Windows users will feel right at home and can start using it right away with no problems
It's obvious it tries to showcase all the eyecandy and appeal to a certain crowd and it does it beautifully with style.
Now all that comes with a price, as much as it didn't crash on me, i could feel a little lag. I found it on all heavily themed distros (Zorin,Chalet..etc). Keep in mind that is purely a rough estimate as i didn't measure how much resources would take with the appropriate tools.

The software selection is generous and could easily install any apps with no problem
I could see Feren becoming the distro of choice for a lot of people if they maybe trim a bit of the "fat" and make it easier on the resources. But if they remove all the themes and effects it would become YALD (yet another Linux distro) so it's gonna be tough.
Pros: Gorgeous desktop, usability, themer, software included
Cons: feels slightly lagging, needed to tweak the ISO before copying onto USB
Hardware: 120Gb Intel SSD, 8GB RAM, Intel i3, Radeon VGA, dual screens

Gave it a rating of 9 out of 10 because there is always room for improvement. Had been using Mint 18.1 as my daily driver until I tried/installed feren OS 2017. It is like having Mint with a lot of extras. Customization is a snap and fun to "play with".
Have one Windows program that I use and with Wine already installed, it was quite easy to install. It runs TeamViewer flawlessly which is quite important to me.

After some years with Ubuntu (mostly Mate) and Linux MInt I finally decided to try something new when I discovered the new Feren release. The biggest challenge was the installation - my USB-Stick wouldn't work and DVD was veeeery slow (which is understandable with such a massive distro).
Once installed it worked like charm. I like the preinstalled software, especially Vivaldi as the main browser. With the immense built-in possibilities to tweak the look Feren is pure eye-candy. One can complain about Feren being just a variant of Mint being a variant of Ubuntu being a variant of Debian. For me it's Feren stand on the shoulders of all those giants. Keep up the great work!
+ fantastic look & all the advantages of Mint and Ubuntu
- problemativ installation; massive Distro (at least it's really using the capacity of a DVD ;-)
