DistroWatch.com: ReactOS

ReactOS

Last Update: 2017-05-18 12:20 UTC

ReactOS is a free and open-source operating system based on the best design principles found in the Windows NT architecture. Written completely from scratch, ReactOS is not a Linux-based system and it shares none of the UNIX architecture. The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on a Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Windows operating system is used, such that people accustomed to the familiar user interface of Windows would find using ReactOS straightforward. The ultimate goal of ReactOS is to allow people to use it as an alternative to Windows without the need to change software they are used to.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Tried on 2 different older PCs which do run DOS, Windows, & Linux.
Found it would not work /w SATA HDD, only old style IDE HDD.
On one PC had to disable onboard Audio.
Once installed it works /w its own software, but can NOT read A:\ (Floppy) or a USB Thumbdrive.
It can read the D:\ (CDROM), but would not install any Windows software.
Thus, it is an interesting idea, but needs more work before it can be used.

I tried both version on a generic 2.9ghz motherboard. Didn't seem to work. It did install. Puzzled.
Seemed like a copy of Window. I didn't observe any of linux's typical function. I'm rather disappointed.

As a work in progress job it's come a long way and has become very capable.
Works most things on my 10+ year old IBM Thinkpad. I've found it works just about as well as the original Win NT I have for the same box, and with some of the same problems!
As it has not got the big corporate backing like MS or SUSE etc., I have not expected too much from it. Will not install on any box I've got with new hardware in it (i3 and i5 processors USB3, with very big discs or SSDs, etc), so I would say it's probable it works better on older hardware. Look here and note all the old hardware that does work -> https://reactos.org/wiki/PC_ROS_Rigs .. Heck, I might try and get the old Thinkpad 600x fixed just to see if it will run ReactOS.
I'll give the latest version a go soon.

You really can't expect too much from this original (and free) work -- unlike many Linuxes (and BSDs) -- ReactOS had to start from scratch in attempting to replicate 30+years of MS's efforts, so it is certain to have some problems and shortcomings, especially with modern hardware but as I said they are getting there. It does run quite a few Windoze programs with no problems (MS Office, haven't tried any games or video).

However, as it has all the same virus problems as M$ Windoze I will never put it on line.
