Solus

Last Update: 2017-08-26 01:22 UTC

Solus is a Linux distribution built from scratch. It uses a forked version of the PiSi package manager, maintained as "eopkg" within Solus, and a custom desktop environment called "Budgie", developed in-house. The Budgie desktop, which can be set to emulate the look and feel of the GNOME 2 desktop, is tightly integrated with the GNOME stack. The distribution is available for 64-bit computers only.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

In brief an amazing distro. Installed on a HP Spectre x360 and runs like a charm.

To be fair I am quite surprised by the functionality, stability, and Look & feel of such a new distro. I am a long time user of Mint which has been the most stable of any distro I have ever tried in the past 15 years.

The other thing that has really surprised me is the battery performance. It is matching the 9 hours I used to get on Windows 10 on a Spectre. I hope it stays like this because battery performance is must for me.

Keep up the good work and put most focus on not letting any regression bugs through the future updates as that's what take people away and onto the land of Mint.

I really agreed with the user below... This distro is everything I was looking for.
Beautiful, especially the Budgie desktop one. Works pretty nice and faster! Their forums and community in general are very friendly.

Totally different from Arch Linux (btw I'm leaving it for now) because I don't agree with Arch Linux philosophy:

- Arch is the opposite of user freedom;
- Never offered much freedom/choice;
- Decisions are made via dev consensus, not popularity;
- Arch is the opposite of a distro with lots of user freedom;
- Simple distro from dev perspective, not users;
- User opinion has no sway here, regardless of how vocal they are about it.

I really enjoyed everything on Solus. I'm testing it for one week and I've decided it's a good place to be.
The cons are:
1. Different commands on terminal (you need to be used to it)
2. Not as much packages available compared to Arch Linux + AUR.
