Solus

Last Update: 2017-08-17 23:15 UTC

Solus is a Linux distribution built from scratch. It uses a forked version of the PiSi package manager, maintained as "eopkg" within Solus, and a custom desktop environment called "Budgie", developed in-house. The Budgie desktop, which can be set to emulate the look and feel of the GNOME 2 desktop, is tightly integrated with the GNOME stack. The distribution is available for 64-bit computers only.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Already surprisingly stable and polished for the limited resources behind this still young distro. Being a separate Linux distro built from scratch is alluring and definitely showing from the blazingly fast startup and shutdown times, and low resource usage while running.

Solus 3 took a leap forward with Linux 4.12 among other things, among other things supporting a range of NVIDIA cards better that had issues before.

I am actually using this as my main distro now and I feel excited to be on this ride!

I'm giving it 8/10 especially due to its still kind of limited pool of apps installable through its package manager eopkg. It shows it's not there quite yet, but Solus 3 also interestingly introduced Snaps support; Linux distro-independent software packages. This seems like a great idea to safely install third party tools that the team hasn't had time to vet yet and I'm almost certain that in a year or two, the main repository along with the Snaps library will solve this issue.

Thought I'd try it on my Laptop, From what I have seen so far it is a great OS. Had a little trouble getting my WiFi to work but once I figured it out it worked just fine. This OS will ease me into the world of Linux as I have only tested out Linux so far.
